How We Treat Rising Damp

At Spectech, our approach to treating rising damp is by installing a chemical damp proof course to stop moisture underneath the ground from rising up the walls.

Our Damp Course Injection impregnates the whole brick course and makes the area impervious to water. Any moisture that rises up from the ground will encounter this protective barrier and become trapped.

In some instances, desalination may be required. This process prevents further deterioration of mortar joints/stone/brickwork caused by the salts.

Salts possess a self-propagating nature, independent of water, which means they continue to expand. These salts cannot be eliminated without employing desalination to extract them.

What Is Rising Damp?
What Causes It?

Rising Damp is caused by the absorption of ground moisture into the walls of a building. It occurs when your home’s porous masonry structure (stone, brick and mortar joints) absorbs too much moisture from within the ground. The moisture will ascend to a height of approximately 6-7 feet until gravity eventually pulls it downward.

The structure now holds both water and a variety of potentially destructive salts, which can lead to damage to the walls and can create an environment that is conducive to mould and mildew growth.

SIGNS OF RISING DAMP - What To Look Out For

SIGNS YOUR ASSET HAS RISING DAMP

Whilst there are multiple signs to tell if your asset may have rising damp, one key indicator is a persistent musty smell.

You may have a room where no matter how many windows are open or if a fan is running, the musty smell never completely dissipates. Inadequate ventilation can lead to a situation where there is no pathway for the moisture that your masonry has absorbed to be released.

Without a proper outlet for the moisture, the symptoms of rising damp will progress at a faster rate.
